This is kind of a funny thing… and if you were born prior to… say 1972… then this little story is going to make you fell old(er). Like me, for example.
As some of you probably know, I post a new comic on Comics.com/Yahoo.com on Mondays. Then on Thursdays, the same comic appears on a lesbian content site, AfterEllen.com. Well, it seems that lots of readers of the AfterEllen site were born after 1972… way after… and have never experienced the joy of all those great sci fi movies from the 80s, like “The Last Starfighter.” So, needless to say, during this current storyline, all those readers have been completely lost… meanwhile, all of us who were around to enjoy those great films from the 80s have been having a good time reminiscing with Jane during her Rylos adventure.
So as not to have my new AfterEllen readers feel left out, starting today, I’ll be posting “Classic Jane” comic strips on Thursdays on AfterEllen. Those of you who read both sites will get a double dose of Jane’s World… new stuff on Monday’s… funny flashbacks on Thursdays. Here’s the comic I did to announce the change. (Does anyone get the inside joke?)

Ohhhh, I’m one of those people who just don’t get sci fi lore unless it’s a bit of Star Wars. I read afterellen too and I discovered Jane’s World there. I’m so thrilled that I can now follow the new story on comics.com and the old funny strips on AE. Double delight for me. Sadly I didn’t get the inside joke, but I love your Fantastic Four t-shirt, at least I think that’s what it is??
I’m glad to hear that you think this double dose of JW is a good idea.
Don’t feel bad, the inside joke is that, in my opinion, Faulkner is practically indecipherable no matter how you read him.
Paige, the Last Starfighter Stuff doesn’t mean a thing to me but the Jane’s World parody is very entertaining. I don’t think you have to be familiar with the movie in order to enjoy the present story line. It may be funnier if you do, but not necessary. Jane is Jane. Things happen. And she deals with them. Therein lies the humor. I’ll read them both and enjoy them both and I think I probably have a lot of company.
As I Lay Dying was not a page-turner for me. Jane is a wonderful book, and I am always happy to turn the page to see what’s happening next!
thanks, Kathy!
and thank you Rod also!
I imagine you’ll have checked on your new strip at Comics.com before you read this, but just in CASE it’s news — the first two rows seem to have been transposed. And I’d read about the Last Starfighter, but I’ve never seen it, though I was born waaaay before 1972.
I’m enjoying the parody on it’s own merit. I love Jane’s World. Thank you for doing it!
Um, Paige, is it true that the first two strips on the newly posted Jane’s World page on comics.com got interchanged, like someone commented? It looks like that is the case because the panel sequence is totally off.
As a person not born before or after 1972 but does like 80’s sci-fi I remember watching this movie. I believe my dad rented it for trying out his new VCR (one without dials on it and front loading). Since you started writing this Janes world adventure I have been on the hunt for a copy to re-familiarize myself. Any ideas on where to find this 80’s golden movie?
cheers
I’m pretty sure Netflix has it, but not for watching instantly on your computer… you’d have to get the actual DVD sent to your house. I would try to pick up a used copy from Amazon… it’ll be worth the $3-4 dollars for sure
A double-dose of Jane each week – YAY!
And I love the antics of Andy/Oliver in the background!
For those who care: The Last Starfighter starred Robert Preston (The Music Man). Great movie, and one of the first to feature extensive use of Computer Graphics instead of miniatures.
I was born in 1984, and “The Last Starfighter” was one of my all time favorite movies I used to watch as a kid. It had everything I loved about movies! Video games, protagonists, adventure, action, aliens, good guys, bad guys, space battles, ect. So when I see you putting this in your Jane’s World comic, this was without a doubt the number one thing I’m tuned into seeing!
To those who were lost and confused, accept the pain! Confusion can also be a charm to a story, and be lucky that you can find out what all of this means (unlike say, LOST).
Jeyl, Your comment about LOST cracked me up. Amen!
I’ve been loving the star fighter tribute.
Did you know The Last Star Fighter was directed by Nick Castle, who also played Michael Myers in the original Halloween? He’s a legend with horror buffs because no one has been able to “stalk” as well as him in the sequels. The theory being his father ran a dance school and this helped him control his movements.
And before he was the star of the Last Star Fighter, Lance Guest played the paramedic in love with Laurie Strode in Halloween 2.
Horror nerd rant over. Keep up the good work!
Dude, is that true… that’s some amazing nerd trivia. Thank you for sharing!!
I have always liked The Last Starfighter, but still haven’t figured out how the parody fits into this comic. Or whether this even fits the definition of parody. Sometimes I wonder if you’re seeing how far you can go before running into copyright trouble. But I’ll stick with it – maybe I’ll figure it out at some point, or maybe someone will explain it to me.
